DEFORESTATION IN WORLD HERTITAGE SITE BIALOWIEZA
OVER 25 YEARS
Bialowieza
primeval forest is the only fragment of natural deciduous and mixed forest in the
European lowland. The forest has an outstanding biological value and is on UNESCO’s World
Heritage Site.
(Last time observed cleared:
blue 1973,
green 1987,
yellow 1992,
red 1997)
There have been various rumors on rates of deforestation in
the World Heritage forest Bialowieza. A multi-temporal deforestation analysis
was made from Landsat data over a 25 years period (1973-97), assisted by LISS 5
m resolution data. The result showed a general decrease in deforestation
following a change in logging practice.
