EVIDENCE OF THE NORTH - SOUTH CONFLICT IN SOUTHERN
Sudan
Landsat data
from 2000 show an
extensive cropping activity
where
the Mabaan
people populated a corridor between Boing and Yabus, just east of the Adar Yel
oil fields. However,
since
2000 it has been reported that over twenty thousand Mabaan people fled east with
only the clothes on their backs to the rebel (SPLA) controlled territory around
Yabus where they now are destituted as internal refugees
- in November 2005 no evidence of cropping can be seen in the area.
The Landsat
images show the extent of farming activities by cleared farm fields in 2000, no
evidence of
cropping
activities can be observed in
late
2006
from an area that would have been able to feed several thousands of people in
2000!.
